Muslims in Britain

The aim of this MOOC is to equip learners with a balanced and well-informed understanding of the lives of British Muslims. The course uses Britain as a case study to shed light on the growth of Islamic communities across the culturally Christian and increasingly secular western world. Through short videos, articles, peer review exercises and moderated discussions, learners are guided through materials covering Islamic practices and beliefs, a history of Islam in Britain, settlement and key contemporary debates. The emphasis throughout is on the lived experience of British Muslims, in contrast to the dramatic themes of current geopolitical discourse.

The course is led by Professor Sophie Gilliat-Ray, Director of the Centre for the Study of Islam in the UK based at Cardiff University.
